Welcome to my final book review for this year. Today, I'll be reviewing another book I read during the Summer which feels like another lifetime ago: Mila Gray's new adult romance, Come Back to Me. It's the first in a series of standalone novels meaning that they don't have to be read in a particular order to be understood but it does help in knowing who the characters are.
The story follows, Jessa a young girl whose older brother Riley and his best friend Kit are Marines back on leave for the summer. She's had a crush on Kit for as long as she can remember but doesn't think he'd be interested. It turns out he is and they embark on a secret summer romance filled with swoon-worthy experiences, where Jessa grows in confidence and learns to follow her dreams and Kit discovers that Jessa just might be the person he'd do anything for.
Then it's time for him and Riley to re-deploy and Jessa promises Kit that she'll wait for him. However, disaster strikes, when the Marine Chaplin arrives bringing terrible news. There was a suicide bomber at Kit and Riley's post in Afghanistan: one of them didn't make it.
It was a searing read, full of heartbreak, and also the pains and joys of growing up to find yourself. It made me laugh and cry in equal measure. I loved Jessa's development through her relationship with Kit and he was just the ultimate book boyfriend. The secondary characters like Riley and Jessa's best friend Didi, shined brightly too and were very fleshed out.
Whether Jessa and Kit get their happy ending; well, you'll have to read to find out.
That's it from me. Remember if you want to see the alternate ending for "To Catch a Rebel" subscribe to the email list.
I'll write to you soon.
