In today's post, I'm giving you the lowdown on some of my favorite fictional characters. Most of them are protagonists but there are a couple of side characters dashed in there for good measure because who doesn't love a compelling side character. Let's dive right in.
1. Bree Matthews; Lengendborn
Starting with the main character one of my favourite books, Bree Matthews is a 16-year-old girl whose mother recently died in a car accident and when she sees a display of magic at a pre-college program that she saw when her mother dies, she goes to infiltrate a secret society on the campus full of descendants of Arthur and his knights.
Bree is strong-willed, smart, and I just love her character development as she tries to earn her place in the Order as a woman of colour, come into her power both magical and otherwise, and go through her grief.
2. Selwyn Kane; Lengendborn by Tracy Deonn
Another character from Legendborn but hear me out. Selwyn is a Merlin, which is a mage in the Order. He is sassy, snarky, and gives Bree hell while she is there but there's more to him than meets the eye. He's an example of an anti-hero done right, with all the angst, power, and mystery that it requires.
3. Juliette Ferrars; Shatter Me Series by Tahereh Mafi
In Shatter Me, Juliette has been imprisoned because she has the power to kill people with a single touch.
When we first met her, she is fragile and hurt from the way everyone has treated her whole life and that doesn't help when a group tries to use her as a weapon against the rebellion. Juliette makes the decision to escape the Reestablishment with the help of an old friend. and while the powers that be, try to mold her into a weapon she still has hope, fights back in her own way, and starts to see her power not as a curse but as a gift. She is a great mix of both strong and sensitive.
4. Julian Blackthorn; The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare
Cassandra Clare is known for her swoon-worthy love interests but my favorite would have to be Julian Blackthorn. He is totally devoted to his family would do anything for them, he's a complete badass and has a plethora of secrets that take some time to unravel. He is one of the best examples of non-toxic masculinity and can be seen as kind of an anti-hero which is my favourite character type.
5. Juliette Cai; These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong
The Juliet in this Romeo and Juliette retelling set in 1920s Shanghai is nothing like the original. She is the heir to the Scarlet Gang and this girl takes no bs. She is the epitome of deadly glamour, whether she's dealing with unwanted suitors, or trying to save her city from a monster in the Huang Pu river with the help of her former lover.
6. Michael Vanderhorst; The Librarian's Vampire Assistant by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff
This guy gave me hope for stories about vampires. He's the leader of a clan of vampires who is investigating the mysterious death of his maker but then he finds himself entangled with a drug cartel, roguish vampires, and a librarian who is somehow mixed up in all this.
Michael is a gentleman and loves to let the reader know it and his budding relationship with Miriam the eponymous librarian is adorable. He is fiercely loyal and devoted to his family, a hilarious narrator, and is a shameless bibliophile.
So, those are some of my favorite fictional characters. What are yours? Let me know below in the comments.
