I've got something to announce: To Catch a Rebel has an audiobook! Those on my email list got the news back in December but while the team was in the middle of recording I decided to get in touch with Tilly to ask her about the project and being a narrator.
How did you become a narrator?
I feel as if I've been narrating since elementary school. We had wonderful librarians that would read books with such enthusiasm and emotion that you were living the words as they spoke. I've been in love with reading ever since. I love listening to books on audible, but narrating seemed like that career that you would dream of, but didn't think you could do. I spent the last few months trying to find myself again outside of work, motherhood, and being a wife and daughter. I had to re-learn what I liked to do. That sounds weird, but I lost myself in caring for others. I took a leap of faith, bet on myself, and auditioned for a book that piqued my interest. Professionally, To Catch a Rebel is the first book that I'm narrating and I couldn't be more excited. What other projects have you done or are working on? In my day to day life, I work in business and enjoy training employees. In the last couple of years, I've switched to recording video training and tutorials. That is nothing compared to getting to do my favorite thing which is read books. What's that phrase they say? Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life. What's your experience recording To Catch a Rebel been like?
Since this is my first production, it's been a lot of trial and error. A lot of learning, but mostly excitement. I'm invested in the characters and sometimes I need to remind myself that I'm reading for others so nix the extra commentary! Which To Catch a Rebel character do you like voicing best?
Aria, she's a strong character and her thoughts are so easy to relate to. She has a beautiful soul that leaps out of the pages, I can't help but feel she is my favorite. What's your favourite book?
Hearing this question made me immediately think of that phrase in the movie Ever After "I could no sooner choose a favorite star in the heavens." How do I pick just one? A few that are on my favorites shelf: Rain of Gold - Victor Villasenor, Bless Me, Ultima - Rudolfo Anaya, The Joy Luck Club - Amy Tan, Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen. I could keep going. There's no way to say just one. What advice would you give to people who want to become narrators?
Take a chance. The excitement does not stop. It feels like I'm going on a journey with others when I narrate. It's wonderful. Do your research and set yourself up for success. There are a lot of great resources out there that show you the equipment that you need and editing tutorials. It's worth it.
That's it for today's post but before you go be sure to listen to a sample from chapter 1 of To Catch a Rebel.
The To Catch a Rebel audiobook is available today from Audible. I was smiling all through it when I first heard it and I can't wait for you to be able to hear it.
